Pilates in your second trimester

In your second trimester of pregnancy you might well be feeling 'ok'! This is great news!

Your body may have adjusted to the hormones & changes in her body thus making these weeks your most comfortable stage. You may have more energy and be wanting to put this to good use. You no doubt are keen to stay flexible, strong and look after your growing bump as best you can.

Pilates exercises can help you achieve these goals. Pilates teaches you how to best engage your core and pelvic floor to provide stability and flexibility throughout your body. This builds muscle strength and muscle memory to help your body recover quicker post-pregnancy.

Some starters for you:

These stretches - child's pose and arm openings assist in stretching and lengthening commonly tight and achy muscles.

Childs pose:

Helps to open and stretch your hips, helps lengthen and mobilise your whole spine and provides a comfortable position to practise your deep, lateral breathing. This position allows for all this and more.

Modifications can include placing both hands to one side and leaning back into child's pose, or once in child's pose move your arms to meet together at one side.

Arm openings:

Positioning is key for this one, starting in 'clam' position in side lying. Using your pilates breathing, moving your top arm in a wide arc to help open up through the front of your chest. This stretches your pectorals, mobilises your thoracic and lumbar spines and works on shoulder control.

Modifications include adding resistance with a band or hand weights.

Best thing you can do now is pace your energy, look after yourself and do regular Pilates sessions with a trained professional. Not only for you now, your growing bump and for once your baby arrives but to enhance relaxation and mindfulness in your life.

Maybe try a duet session with a pregnant friend or your partner?
